Dating back to 1264, Italy’s Fabriano Mill fine arts papers were used and praised by the likes of Michelangelo. Fabriano pioneered many processes common in paper making today, including the watermark and the technique of surface sheet gluing using gelatine. Today’s technologies allow for internal and external sizing to be done without animal by-products, where they were once needed to preserve the papers archivally. This produces a more consistent, non-yellowing, smell-free, and more resilient non-scuffing surface without blotchy spots, providing more superior colour lifting.
